January 1, 2008:  20th Annual Lobster Dip for Maine Special Olympics

 

New Years Day at Noon - On the Beach, by Brunswick Hotel, Old Orchard Beach.

Looking for volunteer dippers. You will be taking a dip in the Atlantic Ocean.  Dippers are asked to raise $100 for Maine Special Olympics.  Costumes encouraged.

Chicken Dippers also wanted, simply raise $100 and dip your feet in a warm pool.

All dippers will be treated to a complimentary post-dip New Years Day bash at the Brunswick.  This event includes food and lobster stew, several live bands, and TV viewing of the big game.

10th Annual Mary's Walk & Kerrymen Pub Road Race

12 Noon at Thornton Academy, 438 Main Street, Saco.

    The American Cancer Society invites people interested in joining the fight against cancer   to join its Relay For Life of York County.  The American Cancer Society's York County Unit will hold the fifth annual Relay For Life event on June 13 and 14, 2008.

                           

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, and take turns walking around a track relay-style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of luminarias (candle lanterns) in a heartwarming ceremony to honor cancer survivors, as well as friends and family members lost to the disease. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

June 28, 2008: Saco Sidewalk Art Festival
Main Street, Saco, Maine

The Arts Festival is an annual cultural extravaganza occurring in June along the quaint and beautiful Main Street in Saco. A combination of visual arts, performing arts, crafts people and sculptors. Mediums include paintings in oil, acrylics, watercolors, pen and ink, prints, etchings, photography, paper casting and innovative sculptures. There are wonderful displays from members of the Southern Maine Craftsmen. The show attracts many quality artists. 

The Saco Sidewalk Arts Festival Committee invites you to participate in the 38th Annual Arts Festival located in the heart of beautiful downtown Saco .  Thousands of people attend this annual event; where more than 175 artists display a rich variety of artwork, sculpture and photography.

 

Saco Sidewalk Arts Festival is a non-profit organization sponsored and now managed by Saco Spirit.  It is established that a part of the proceeds from the Saco Sidewalk Art Festival be used to promote the Artist-in-Residence programs in schools within our community. 

 

The Saco Sidewalk Art Festival is dedicated to promoting art and culture in our community. Saco Spirit receives all funds, after the Artist In Residence donation, to invest in the community by way of holiday decorations, flags, banners and a myriad of other community beautification projects.

July 11 -13, 2008: 11th ANNUAL GREEK HERITAGE FESTIVAL
St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church
186 Bradley Street, Saco
The 3-day fun filled festival features:

  • Crafts
  • Church Tours
  • Attic Treasures
  • Religious Items
  • A Greek Book Store
  • Activities for Children
  • Continuous Greek Music

Authentic homemade Greek food and pastries (made from the parishioners traditional recipes).

Live Greek band (The Hellenic & Near East Musical Society Ensemble) Friday & Saturday from 5-9 pm. Greek dance ensemble (V.E.V.A.) on Saturday at 4 & 7 pm. Narrated church tours and Greek culture lectures and videos (at posted times); bookstore, religious items, Greek grocery store, souvenirs, Greek coffee house, Loukoumathes (Greek fried dough balls), Baklava ice cream sundaes, and much, much more.

Free admission, ample on site free parking and handicap accessibility. Free satellite parking and shuttle from Shaw's Saco Valley Shopping Center parking lot (Friday & Saturday from 4 - 10 pm). Held rain or shine, under the big tents and in the parish hall.

Last summer 10,000 - 15,000 people enjoyed food; fun; music & festivities on the beautiful grounds of the recently constructed Byzantine style St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.

The Festival starts at 11:00 A.M. each day and runs until 10:00 P.M. on Friday & Saturday. Closes at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday.

Starting July 19 - Running 5 Consecutive Weeks: Music On Main / Biddeford

Biddeford Savings Bank and Pit Boss Barbecue, along with Heart of Biddeford, will bring "Music on Main Street", a series of free lunchtime concerts in the park adjacent to the bank at 254 Main Street, Biddeford.

You can either bring a brown bag lunch and simply enjoy the music in the warm sunshine - or for a mere $5 donation, you can enjoy a delicious Pit Boss BBQ lunch and help your favorite charity.

July 25, 2008: Maine Shriner's - Lobster Classic All-Star Football Game
Waterhouse Field - West Street, Biddeford, Maine

Pre-Game Events at 6:30 p.m., Game at 7:30 p.m.

Kora Temple sponsors the Annual Maine Shrine Lobster Classic All-Star high school football game at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night at Waterhouse Field in Biddeford. Every year eighty-eight student athletes and eighteen coaches volunteer their time and talents in support of helping to improve the lives of physically-challenged children. This game will be played for the benefit of Shriner's Hospitals for Children. To date, over one hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars has been raised to help provide free orthopedic and burn injury care for Maine children. Currently, the Shrine is treating nearly sixteen hundred Maine residents at its Springfield and Boston, Massachusetts facilities.

August : SACO BAY RACE WEEKEND - 2008

 August 23 - 8th Annual Saco Bay Criterium -  Downtown, Saco

Location:  Gov. John Fairfield School, 75 Beach Street, Saco.  

Bring your family and friends to join in the festivities.  Race day series consists of 12 closed course bicycle races for kids, juniors, men, women, masters, and professional cyclists.  

The Saco Criterium bike races wind through one mile of Saco roads on a technically challenging course.  The races are timed plus five laps with races for kids to skilled racers from all over New England.  To register for racing: www.bikereg.com .  Spectators and racers will be treated to discount coupons from various Saco Main Street businesses.  Bring your kids along for the kids' race, sponsored by the American Lung Association of Maine.  Enjoy smoothies made on Bike Blenders from the Community Bicycle Center.

Sanctioned by the U.S. Cycling Federation, the Saco Bay Criterion is organized by the Saco Bay Race Committee of the Southern Maine Cycling Club.  Proceeds from the races go back to our community. Races are held rain or shine.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ON RACE DAY 8/25.  Needed: Road Marshals and Registrars.  Need a few folks to help with a snack booth, bicycle smoothie blenders and the CBC booth.  Road marshals are needed for either the 6:30am-11:00am time slot or 10:30am-3:30pm time slot.  Your responsibilities will be to monitor bike, pedestrian, and vehicle traffic at a turn on the closed race course.  Registrars help sign in the race participants.  To volunteer contact Andy Greif, Community Bicycle Center, 284 Hill Street, Biddeford.  282-9700 or 229-8199.  ( www.communitybike.net )

October 25, 2008:    ANNUAL PUMPKIN FEST

Something Spook-Tacular is happening in Downtown Saco...

Have you ever seen hundreds of Jack'O Lanterns all grinning at once? Come to the Pumpkin Fest and that is exactly what you'll see! That's because Main Street Saco will be the site of the Annual Pumpkin Festival. Hundreds of carved pumpkins will be on display for everyone to view and enjoy. There will also be all kinds of activities for kids "of all ages"! Everyone is welcome and, of course, don't forget to bring your owned carved pumpkin to add to the pumpkin patch!! You may take your pumpkins home with you at the end of the evening. This festival is opening to everyone, not just citizens of Saco. SO COME ONE COME ALL AND BE PART OF THE EXCITEMENT!!!

October: BIDDEFORD DOWNTOWN HALLOWEEN
Main Street, Biddeford
Annual Halloween Trick or Treat. The celebration is a simple one - businesses give candy to trick-or-treaters from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Participating businesses will be designated with a orange paper pumpkin taped to their door or window. The Downtown Development Commission is the organizing force for this Trick or Treat Evening. The DDC is also sponsoring a Halloween window decorating contest. Prizes will be awarded for the best windows.
